Austria, Bregenz | Production: 2018 | Directed by: Kasper Holten | Set Design: Es Devlin
Duration: approx. 2 hours 30 minutes
This production made history not only for its outstanding cast and music but also for its spectacular visual presentation. Georges Bizet’s iconic Carmen, presented at the 2018 Bregenz Festival, took place on one of the most extraordinary opera stages in the world—a floating stage on Lake Constance.
The direction was entrusted to Kasper Holten, former director of the Royal Opera House in London, while the monumental set design was created by Es Devlin, a world-renowned visual artist known for staging concerts for stars such as Adele, U2, Kanye West, and Pet Shop Boys.
Inspired by the famous fortune-telling scene, the entire set was built around gigantic playing cards that rotated, unfolded, and transformed into a stunning space of fate and passion. It is on these cards that Carmen’s drama unfolds—charged with tension, desire, and tragic inevitability.
Performers:
Bregenz Festival Chorus, Prague Philharmonic Choir,
