Opera Screening from the Wiener Staatsoper (2023)

We invite you to a special screening of Giuseppe Verdi’s Otello, recorded in October 2023 at the Wiener Staatsoper. In the title role, the celebrated tenor Jonas Kaufmann delivers a critically acclaimed performance, hailed as one of the finest interpretations of Otello in recent years. He is joined on stage by Ludovic Tézier as Iago and Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Desdemona.

The production was directed by Adrian Noble, with the orchestra and chorus of the Wiener Staatsoper conducted by Alexander Soddy. Set design by Dick Bird and lighting by Jean Kalman create a minimalist yet powerful visual environment that highlights the psychological intensity of the characters and the drama of the plot.

Critics have praised Kaufmann’s masterful portrayal of Otello, capturing the full emotional spectrum—from heroic triumph to devastating despair. Tézier’s Iago is chillingly manipulative, while Willis-Sørensen’s Desdemona shines with lyrical beauty and emotional depth, especially in the arias “Willow Song” and “Ave Maria.”
