A summer night, the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome, on the eve of the 1990 FIFA World Cup final—and a meeting of three operatic giants that made history: José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti performed together on one stage for the very first time, creating an unforgettable spectacle watched live by over 800 million people around the world. It was an unprecedented moment in the history of classical music.
Each tenor brought his unique style and emotional depth to the performance:
Plácido Domingo stirred hearts with the drama of “E lucevan le stelle” from Tosca,
Luciano Pavarotti amazed with his angelic rendition of “Nessun dorma” from Turandot,
José Carreras enchanted with passion and lyrical sensitivity.
The magic of the evening was completed by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, conducted by Zubin Mehta.
