The Ninth Symphony according to Béjart | Ballet Screening

Japan, Tokyo | Production: 2014 | Duration: 88 minutes

Music: Ludwig van Beethoven | Choreography and Staging: Maurice Béjart

Conductor: Zubin Mehta | Filmed at: NHK Hall, Tokyo

Performers: Béjart Ballet Lausanne, Tokyo Ballet, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Ritsuyukai Choir

This is one of the most moving dance productions of our time—a fusion of Beethoven’s genius with the visionary choreography of Maurice Béjart, brought to life by an impressive international ensemble and inspired by the spirit of the “Ode to Joy”: All men shall be brothers.

In November 2014, on the stage of Tokyo’s prestigious NHK Hall, 250 artists—dancers and musicians—came together to create a monumental performance in which ballet becomes a message of peace, unity, and spiritual brotherhood. Featured on stage were Béjart Ballet Lausanne, Tokyo Ballet, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Ritsuyukai Choir, conducted by Zubin Mehta.

This extraordinary performance was honored by audiences at the Music Gardens Festival with the 2017 Golden Watering Can Award, recognizing it as the best screening of that edition.
